Restaurants for Breakfast

Their brunch is one of my favorites ever, anywhere. Some creative menu options and something for everyone.

Great spot to sit and enjoy a small town's character. The menu and venue is on the simpler side. But the food is great. My favorite - the potato egg and cheese sandwich on a roll. No nonsense, just great fuel to start your day. I've heard great things about the oatmeal here from friends and guests...

Restaurants for Lunch and Dinner

I have yet to hear a single bad thing about any restaurant in town. It seems you can't go wrong, so don't feel you must follow my advice here. These are just the ones we have found we enjoy the most.
This is an excellent restaurant. You will not go wrong here. Just a few minutes walk off of Main St. The dining room is slightly fancier than the rest of this blue collar town, but just a little. If you're short on time they have a delicious artisan pizza selection for takeout. The pies are slightly bigger than personal sized, unless you're a big eater. Then they are perfect for one. Carryout only special is 2 pizzas for $18.

Great in the summertime - lots of outdoor seating. We enjoy the atmosphere in this restaurant as much as the food. This building used to be the old train depot of the town. It has a train theme and train paraphernalia from generations past throughout building. Enjoy the old photos of town while you're there.

A French themed restaurant with some authentic? dishes. We haven't tried it yet but I've heard good things. If you're interested in trying some new cuisine this might be a good opportunity.

Delicious pastas with an ample wine selection. Maybe try the champagne brunch on Sundays. The dining area is usually quite dark. Best seat in the house is probably up by the front of the building where you can watch pedestrians on the sidewalk through the large glass windows. They also have outdoor seating during good weather.

Just steps from the Hudson River. The building's 2nd floor doubles as an inn that has been in operation for almost 200 years. Check out one of their dining rooms if you are looking for steaks, fresh market fish, or pub fare. They also offer prix fixe menu and Sunday Lunch and Sunday Brunch menus.

Cafes around Cold Spring

Cold Spring has a small handful of excellent cafes. Visit these places if looking to pass some time, people watch, or get some emails written that you've been avoiding.
A must visit if you get the chance. The beverages are excellent, but as a bonus, TRY THE EMPANADAS if you are looking for a snack. They also offer many highly recommended gelato flavors and pastries. To top it all off, this charming location is steps from the river and is run by a favorite local couple from Argentina. Check out their outdoor seating area, isn't it cute?

Ask about how they roast their beans. I don't recall the exact process, but it is unique. It gives their coffee a slight citrus flavor. The open floor space is shared by an apothecary and hair salon.

Pubs around Cold Spring

It's a small town, so the list is short. But they all have a small-town charm to them and the two listed below are directly across the street from each other. Note that most the restaurants in town also have a bar.
Doug's is a local favorite for townies. It offers a full bar and adequate beer on tap. Check out the old school jukebox.

Don't be fooled by the barbershop in the storefront - you're in the right place. Just walk through the barber to find your brews. Excellent selection of tasty beers on tap. They do not brew beer here, just serve it, in an old brick room with exposed beams.

Activities around Cold Spring

Most of these you can do without a car - enjoy the sights and places!
You can get there from the northbound metro north train platform. Just keep walking south (away from town) on the platform until you see the ramp down to the beginning of the park. Explore the trail for just a few minutes that goes up into the woods a little bit for a nice view of a waterfall. You can't miss it if you just keep following the creek.

Hike the Washburn and/or Cornish Estate Trails. You can make a nice loop out of the two. Expect the loop between the Washburn and Cornish Estate trails to take 2.5-5 hours depending on your speed. Access the trail from the Washburn parking lot on 9D, about a 15 minute walk from the house. Take Fair Street to get there.

During approximately May-October, the Farmer's market is in the parking lot at Boscobel on 9D about a mile south of town. It is walkable but just beware that you will need to walk on the shoulder of the road at times and there is not a sidewalk. I see people doing it.

Sitting within big rolling hill pastures of the Hudson Highlands and within Fahnestock State Park, on a foggy day it feels like you're up in the Scottish Highlands but walking through gardens that have been meticulously cared for by students. Yes, they run a school here for gardening. I have some literature on the desk in the room. Highly recommend. You need to either have a car or call a taxi to get there, however.

Lots to see and do in the town north of Cold Spring if our little village starts to feel a little too sleepy. There is a brewery conveniently located by the train station - 2 Way Brewing Co., named after the Hudson River and its tidal nature that extends all the way up to Albany on the biggest tides of the year.

Take the train to Poughkeepsie (about 25 minutes) and walk across the Hudson River. The bridge is for pedestrians only. It used to be for cars and trains until it burned and then was repurposed for walking/biking. Originally built in 1889. While you're there, check out Poughkeepsie - the "Queen City of the Hudson" and New York's 2nd capital during and after the American Revolution.
